Melville John da Cruz MBBS (UWA 1986), FRACS (Oto 1996), M Medical Science (UWA1995), Doctor of Medicine (USyd 2003), is a Conjoint Senior Staff Specialist ENT Surgeon specialising in Otology, Neuro Otology and Cochlear Implantation at Westmead Hospital, and associate professor at University of Sydney. His surgical training was through the NSW rotation of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (1996) with further specialised otological post fellowship training at Addenbrookes Hospital, Cambridge and in California. He has performed roles as head of department, editorial boards and training supervisory positions over the last 25 years. He has performed hundreds of otological procedures over the last 27 years including over 900 cochlear implants, ABI’s, BCI’s and over 300 hundred acoustic neuromas surgeries. Current clinical and research interests include outcome measurement following otological surgeries, including cochlear implantation for rehabilitation of the profoundly deaf, the use of simulation in temporal bone skills development and using machine learning to automate image analysis post CI surgery. He currently is supervising students in Master’s and Doctoral programmes at the University of Sydney and Macquarie University.
