Xue Zhong Liu,. M.D., Ph.D., FACS., an internationally renowned surgeon-scientist, is the Hotchkiss Endowed Chair and Vice Chair of Department of Otolaryngology and Professor of Otolaryngology, Human Genetics, Biochemistry, and Pediatrics at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. Dr. Liu is an active member of the American Academy of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery, fellow of American College of Surgeons, Active Fellowship in the Triological Society, an elected member of the Academy of Science, Engineering and Medicine of Florida (ASEMFL), and American Association for the Advancement of Science. Dr. Liu graduated from the West China University of Medical Sciences in Chengdu, China. He completed a general surgery internship and otolaryngology residency at the University of Miami. He obtained his Ph.D in Audiology/Human Genetics in the University of Manchester and Postdoctoral training in Molecular Genetics at MRC Mammalian Unit, Oxford, in England. He is fully licensed in Otolaryngology. He specializes in the treatment of hearing loss and ear diseases. He was selected by his peers as one of the “Best Doctors in America” and as 2015-16 Provost Award for Scholar Activity in University of Miami. As a surgeon-scientist, , one of top NIH funded surgeon-scientists, who has a PhD in Human Genetics and postdoctoral training in Molecular Genetics, Dr. Liu is widely recognized as one of the most prolific researchers in the field of the genetics of deafness. He has participated in global collaborations, producing over 300 scientific papers and book chapters in high impact journals and has been instrumental in discovering 18% of all new genes related to deafness in the world. He has had a career long interest in genetic deafness and has made many significant contributions to our understanding of the identification of deafness genes and to molecular pathogenesis of deafness and gene/cell based therapies as well as and clinical diagnosis/management of deafness over the past decade.
