Byung Yoon CHOI Korea (Republic of)

Byung Yoon Choi, M.D., Ph.D., is a professor of Otorhinolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at Seoul National University Bundang Hospital, Seoul National University College of Medicine, Korea. He is a leading expert in genetic diagnosis of hearing loss and cochlear implantation, with a strong focus on precision medicine and auditory rehabilitation. Dr. Choi completed his M.D. (1997), M.S. (2003), and Ph.D. (2005) in Neuroscience-Otolaryngology at Seoul National University. He pursued advanced research as a Postdoctoral Fellow at the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD) at the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) from 2006 to 2010. As a renowned clinician and researcher, Dr. Choi has performed over 1,500 cochlear implant surgeries, making him one of the most experienced otologists in Korea. His research primarily explores the genetic underpinnings of hearing loss, including the development of gene therapy strategies. He collaborates extensively with Regeneron (USA), Harvard Medical School, and the University of Miami, contributing to groundbreaking advancements in the field. In addition to his clinical and academic roles, Dr. Choi serves as CEO of SENSORICURE, a biotechnology company specializing in genetic diagnostics and gene therapy for hearing loss. He has authored over 191 SCI/SCIE-indexed publications and has received multiple prestigious awards, including the 2024 Academic Award from the Korean Society of Otorhinolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery.
